The Traffic Safety Index System

01/01/2011

Traffic accidents represent a social and economic problem in many developed and developing countries, because of their social, economic disastrous effects, whereas the World Health Organization, on the occasion of World Health Day 2004 warned of the high rate of traffic accidents in low- or middle-income countries, and the need to take the necessary measures to reduce them, on the grounds that more than 91% of road deaths in the world occur in low-income countries, which have less than half of the cars in the world.

This study aims to formulate a proposal for a system of indicators that reflect the level of traffic safety and as a tool to evaluate the procedures applied ensuring traffic safety. The study is based on analysis of the current state of road accidents in the Sultanate on data and information issued by the Royal Oman Police, represented by the Directorate General of Traffic, as it depends on some data from other entities such as the Ministry of National Economy, Capital Market Authority and the Ministry of Health and some international organizations such as WHO and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.
