Omanis’ Opinion on Preferred Housing Designs, Loans and Housing Support: First Issue

31/05/2016

The Government provides a number of social housing programs (such as housing assistance program, housing loan program, etc.) aimed at providing adequate housing for low-income families and families under the social security system.

The survey was conducted by the National Centre for Statistics and Information on the preferred housing designs and the Omanis’ attitudes towards housing assistance and loans to provide the necessary information to evaluate housing programs and to assess the opinions of citizens and beneficiaries from such programs. The survey is in line with the Centre’s commitment to provide the necessary statistical information and indicators for decision-makers and government institutions to help plan and develop policies on an informational basis.

The main objectives of the Omani survey on preferred housing patterns, loans and housing assistance are summarized as follows:

· To know the types of housing, the characteristics of the housing types preferred by Omanis, the reasons for such preferences, and the extent to which the Omanis’ housing preferences have been achieved.

· To determine the satisfaction of the beneficiary groups with regard to the social housing programs, to the entitlement conditions and the procedures followed in these programs.

• To know the frequency of Omani housing loans demands, the characteristics of these loans and the conditions for obtaining them, as well as the characteristics of the beneficiary families.

The survey data were collected during the period (4-21) January 2016 through telephone interviews with a sample of Omani citizens via telephone and mobile.

The sample size was 3520 Omani citizens (age group (18 years and above) from all governorates of the Sultanate, with different educational levels, age and gender groups. The sample included two types of target groups:

· The first category: 2133 citizens who applied for housing assistance or loans from the Ministry of Housing, or have already received such assistance (according to data from the Ministry of Housing).

· The second category: 1387 citizens from the general public: Omani citizens aged 18 and above.
