The Sultanate, represented by the (NCSI), reviewed its experience in moving from data to information and knowledge, in a working paper submitted during the first Gulf statistical meeting which ended in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Wednesday (March 22nd).
The Center presented its work methodology that is adopted based on the industrial concept beginning with the production of official versions of the private data collected from various sources, followed by the production of statistical information either through the formulation of clear messages with added value based on complex indicators or through conducting analytical studies, evaluation, research or other studies, which require cadres with advanced experience and qualifications to read beyond the numbers.

The working paper addressed the stage of knowledge-making and the mechanisms of strengthening it in society, based on the general principles of official statistics approved by the statistical agencies across the world and committed to in their annual meetings with the United Nations Statistical Commission. The paper also highlighted the Center's efforts at keeping abreast of modern technologies and also its keenness to have a strong presence in the social networking platforms. The paper also focused on the knowledge services provided by the Center through various means including free smartphone applications.
Entitled Public-Private Partnership
In a panel discussion entitled Public-Private Partnership in Statistics, NCSI reviewed its experience in building partnerships with private sector institutions. It presented its experience of working on the price survey data in partnership with the private sector. The paper reviewed the technical developments in the system of survey on prices, its advantages as well as challenges.
NCSI also participated in the statistical exhibition held as part of the Forum, and the NCSI stall displayed the various publications issued by the Centre, and the diverse information services provided by the Center to all the segments of the society. The two-day forum, which was held under the theme "Strengthening Statistical Partnerships in Support of Economic Policies and Sustainable Development in the GCC", discussed the demand for data from the international, regional and national perspectives, with special focus on global issues and their impact on policies and reforms throughout the world, and in the GCC region in particular.
40 Gulf and international speakers
The forum hosted 40 Gulf and international speakers and statisticians across diverse fields including data producers, data users and the academic sector. The major focus areas included the request for statistical data and information emerging from national development projects, the sustainable development agenda and emerging global economic issues; National Development and Sustainable Development in the GCC countries; and the promotion of statistical partnerships among users and producers of data to support economic policies and sustainable development in the GCC. Measuring the progress towards sustainable development goals, and ways to enhance statistical knowledge were also taken up at the forum, along with the mechanisms of statistical development using ICT. The need for increased cooperation among the Arab countries to make the most of the data revolution towards enhancing the production and dissemination of statistics was also discussed deeply.
