The Sultanate of Oman has been celebrating the International Museums Day, which falls on May 18, every year since 1977. The International Council of Museums (ICOM) adopted its meeting in Moscow on that particular day as an international Museums Day (IMD) to raise awareness of the fact that museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among people.
As Oman joins the world to mark the Museums day, the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NSCI) has revealed that more than 367,000 people have visited the Sultanate's museums in 2018. The NCSI statistics indicated that The Bait Al Zubair Museum has the largest number of visitors, reaching 28.4% of visitors to the local museums, with about 104,562 visitors.The Museum of the Frankincense Land came second by receiving 26.9% of visitors to the Sultanate museums, registering 98,878 visitors last year. The same statistics showed that the number of visitors to the National Museum came third with 21.9% of visitors to the Omani Museums, registering 80,337 visitors in 2018. The Children's Museum received 28,315 visitors in 2018, while The Sultan's Armed Forces Museum received 17,010 visitors, and the Natural History Museum has been visited by 14,478 last year.
Bait al Barandah Museum recorded about 8,088 visitors, Bait Al Qasham Museum has been visited by 5,871 visitors, and Ghaia Modern Art Museum has been visited by 5,602 visitors. The AL Saidiya School Museum recorded 2,390 visitors, while the Omani-French Museum received 1,882 visitors, and the Currency Museum of Oman received 209 visitors.
