The total number of hours of radio and television broadcasts in the Sultanate reached 112,055 hours with an average daily broadcast of 307 hours, which included transmission by both the government and private television and radio channels. The programs broadcast ranged from news and development, to religious, cultural and educational content along with programs focused on youth and sports affairs.
According to the statistics, the total broadcasting by Oman TV (owned by the government) amounted to 72 hours per day throughout 2015, and its total annual broadcasting reached 260,280 hours. Broadcast by the private TV channel Majan TV reached 8,760 hours. On the other hand, the government owned Oman Radio achieved 41,975 hours of transmission last year. It included 24 hours of daily transmission by the main station, youth station and English language station, and 19 hours of daily transmission by the music station.
Oman's private radio stations together broadcast 96 hours a day, with each of the four private stations -- al Wisal, Hala, Merge and Hi -- broadcasting 24 hours a day. The total broadcasting hours of the private radio stations amounted to 35,040 hours in 2015.
Among the various programs and shows, art, leisure and entertainment shows dominated with over 2,637 hours of transmission on Oman TV; 3,751 hours on private TV channels; 1,084 hours on public (government) radio stations; and 18,561 hours on private radio stations.
Programmes on religion, culture, and education were broadcast for 2209 hours (Oman TV); 3026 hours (on Majan TV); 3366 channels (on public radio); and 1190 hours (on private radio stations).
News programs were transmitted for 1963 hours on Oman TV; 52 hours on Majan TV; 1066 hours on government radio stations; and 620 hours on private radio stations. Developmental programs and shows got 1252 hours of transmission on Oman TV; 470 hours on Majan TV; 2721 hours on Oman Radio; and 2938 hours on private radio stations.
Children's programs and shows were broadcast for 563 hours (Oman TV); 730 hours (Majan TV); and 349 hours (Oman Radio); while the private radio stations did not air any such programs.
Youth and sport shows and programs had a coverage of 160 hours (Oman TV); 157 hours (Majan TV); 199 hours (Oman Radio); and 749 hours (private radio stations). Other programmes and shows were broadcast for 246 (Oman TV); 574 hours ( Majan TV), 11 hours (Oman radio); and 10982 hours (private radio stations) last year, the NCSI data says.
