​The Sultanate of Oman will participate in the World Literacy Day celebrations on Saturday, September 8. The event, which is organized every year, will be held under the theme "Developing literacy and skills". The World Literacy Day provides an opportunity for governments, civil society organizations and stakeholders to highlight the improvement in literacy rates, which include reading and writing, and reflect on the remaining literacy challenges facing the world.

The data of the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) indicate that the number of students in literacy centers during the academic year 2017/2018 in different governorates of the Sultanate reached 6,379 students, namely 6,187 females and 192 males. In the first year, there were 2,468 students, of which 97 were males and 2,371 were females. In the second year, there were 1,801 students, including 26 males and 1,775 females. There are 2,110 students in third year, with 69 males and 2,041 females. The total number of male and female literacy centers spread across the Sultanate was 15, with a total of 604 classes. On the other hand, the number of students in adult education centers reached 9,592 during the last academic year. Of them, 7,332 were males and 2,260 were females. The literacy is an essential part of the United Nations 'Sustainable Development Goals.' It is also include in the agenda of United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by the organization in September 2015, promotes the objective of access to quality education and educational opportunities at any age. One of the goals of the fourth objective of sustainable development is to ensure that young people are taught the necessary skills to read, write and calculate, and adults get the access to opportunities that they do not have.
