إن الوقوف المستنير على واقع السكان وخصائصهم هو رصد لنتاج السياسات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية، يساعد على تقييمها وتطويرها، ويعتبر موضوع السكان من الموضوعات مناط الاهتمام الكبير لصناع القرار والأكاديميين والعديد من الفئات المجتمعية التي زاد اهتمامها بالإحصاءات والمعلومات. وفي هذا السياق، أصدر المركز الوطني للإحصاء والمعلومات الإصدار الأول لنشرة إحصاءات السكان باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية في 2013 وتتضمن بيانات منتصف عام 2011، وقد احتوت على 40 جدول إحصائي عن الموضوع من واقع بيانات الإدارة العامة للأحوال المدنية، حيث تتضمن جداول وبيانات تتعلق بعدد السكان العمانيين والوافدين المسجلين حسب الجنس والجنسية وفئات السن حسب المحافظة والولاية، وغيرها من البيانات المتعلقة بالإحصاءات المذكورة.
