The total number of students in the Sultanate's schools during the academic year (2016/2017) at different levels was 748,308 students with an average of 26 students per class and 11 students per teacher in a thousand and 725 schools. These schools comprised 28,879 classes, while the number of teachers was 68,384 teachers, according to data released by the National Center for Statistics and Information.
The school education statistics bulletin shows that students in the Sultanate's schools are distributed among five types of schools, including public schools, private schools, international schools (foreign communities), private education schools and other public schools. The bulletin showed that public schools accounted for 75.4% of the students. The number of enrolled students at public schools was 564 thousand and 356, followed by private schools with 13.8% of students at 103 thousand and 358 students. International schools and foreign community schools accounted for 8.3% with 61,930 students, while the percentage of students in other public schools, including Islamic institutes, guard schools, Royal Air Force of Oman, Royal Oman Police, centers of the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs and Children's Councils in Omani women's associations, reached 2.4% numbered at 18 thousand and 148 students. At the level of classes and phases, the highest percentage of students in the Sultanate's schools came from basic education, the second phase (grades 5-10) accounted for 39.7% at 297,381 students, of which 152,704 were males and 144,677 females. The primary education accounted for 31.4% of the total number of students. The number of students at this stage was 234 thousand and 843, of whom 119 thousand and 142 were males, 115 thousand and 701 females. There were 84 thousand and 276 students (11.3%) in the 11th and 12th grades of which 42 thousand and 786 were males and 41 thousand and 490 females.
Kindergartens accounted for 10.4% of the students with 78 thousand and 19 students, including 39 thousand and 217 males and 38 thousand and 802 females. Other general education institutions, which includes general education for grades 1-12 in international schools (foreign communities) and other public schools, had 7.2% of students. The number of students in special education schools inside and outside the Sultanate reached 549 students, including 336 males and 213 females. The number of students in the Sultanate reached 516 and outside the Sultanate 33. Mental disability was predominant among students enrolled in special education schools with a total of 210 students, followed by 181 deaf and dumb students and 157 visually impaired students. The number of students in the literacy centers in the Sultanate was 6,935, the majority of whom were females (97.5% of the total). The number of students in adult education centers was 11,904, the majority of whom (78%) were males.
