The consumer price index in the Sultanate rose by 1.93% by the end of the second quarter of 2017 compared to the same quarter of 2016, according to the latest data released by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
The consumer price index at the end of the second quarter was 104.70 compared to 1033.80 at the end of the same quarter of 2016. The rise in the index during the second quarter of 2017 was due to the rise in the prices of major groups such as housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels by 1.44%, transport by 0.66%, food and non-alcoholic beverages by 0.89%, household furniture and equipment and household maintenance by 2.90%. Prices of education set increased by 2.85%, health by 0.40%, culture and entertainment by 0.16%, restaurants and hotels by 0.33%, personal goods and miscellaneous services by 1.40%.
The prices of communications group decreased by 2.93%, miscellaneous goods and services by 1.29% and communications by 2.93%. At the governorate level, North Al Batinah Governorate witnessed the highest rise in the consumer price index at the end of the second quarter of 2017 with 2.69%, followed by Dhofar by 2.17%, Muscat by 1.86%, Adh Dhakhiliya by 1.63% and Ash Sharqiyah South and North governorates by 1.41%, Adh Dhahirah by 1.40% and Al Burayimi by 0.75%.
