Hospitals and health centers in the Sultanate conducted 111 thousand and 313 surgeries in 2016. These operations varied between large and small and the statistics from the (NCSI) indicate that the number of major operations reached 50 thousand and 883.
Khoula Hospital has carried out the highest number of major operations among the Sultanate's hospitals. The number of operations done out during 2016, which is classified as major operations, reached 8 thousand and 644, accounting for approximately 17% of the major operations carried out in the Sultanate. Minimal operations conducted in health centers were 12 thousand and 798 accounting for 21.2% of the minor operations conducted in the Sultanate. The Health Statistics Bulletin issued by the NCSI said that the outpatient clinics in the Ministry of Health recorded about 15 million 616 thousand and 509 outpatient visits, including 14 million 801 thousand and 984 Omani patients, an average of 6.1 visits per person per year, 814 thousand and 525 expatriate patients visits by inpatients with an average per capita visit reaching 0.4 in 2016. The bulletin also revealed that outpatient clinics in the private sector recorded 4 million 14 thousand and 725 visits, including 2 million, 51 thousand and 481 visits by Omanis with an average of 0.8 visits per person during the year, while 1 million 962 thousand and 776 visits of expatriates were recorded with an average of 1.0 visits per person.
The bulletin also indicates that the number of hospitals affiliated to the Ministry of Health in the Sultanate's governorates reached 49 with 5 thousand and 34 beds, while the number of health centers reached 23 complexes and 183 health centers. According to the bulletin, the number of employees in these institutions under the Ministry of Health amounted to 39 thousand and 197, where the number of doctors was 5 thousand and 875 doctors, including two thousand and 455 specialists and consultants, while the number of dentists reached 323. The number of pharmacists of the Ministry of Health reached 526, while the number of nurses was 14,587. The number of physiotherapists was 349, X-Ray Technicians and Radiographers, together were 774. In addition, the number of health workforce in other government agencies reached 4 thousand and 332 cadres in the hospitals of the Royal Oman Police, PDO, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital and the Diwan of Royal Court.
Regarding the private sector health institutions, the bulletin shows that the number of hospitals in the sector reached 19 hospitals with 666 beds, while the number of medical centers and private compounds stood at 236 centers and clinics while the number of general clinics was 304. According to the bulletin, the number of Chinese and Indian clinics reached 48, and the private clinics of private companies reached about 158 clinics. The number of specialized clinics reached 344, and dental clinics reached 251. There are about 27 private medical laboratories in the Sultanate, 7 magnetic resonance diagnostic centers and 672 private pharmacies.
