As per the report issued by Open Data Inventory (ODIN), which is the only assessment to cover open data on the website as provided by national statistical organizations, the Sultanate, represented by the National Center for Statistics and Information came second on the Arab level and 7th on West Asia level.
The report pointed out that the Sultanate jumped 16 positions in 2107 compared to 2016 from 53rd from 180 countries to 69 from 179 countries in 2016. The Sultanate scored 50 points in 2017 compared to 42 points in 2016. The ODIN report for 2017, which assessed the open data by assessing the content of the portals of the National Center for Statistics and Information website namely the social, economic and environmental data. The report, which covered 21 areas, said that the Sultanate progressed in openness and coverage. The total score of this sector increased to 63 in 2017 compared to 48 in 2016.
The report also highlighted the progress made by the Sultanate in economic statistics, from 46 in 2016 to 61 in 2017; thanks to improving the databases of banks and banking organizations. The score jumped from 0 in 2016 to 44 in 2017. The price indices increased from 72 in 2016 to 83 in 2017. The international trade rules increased from 81 in 2016 to 94 in 2017. It should be noted that ODIN report covers high-income states that are members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), as well as middle and low-income states.The analysis includes 21 areas that assess the progress made in sustainable development, the social, economic, cultural and environmental development aims.
The report is very important due to the important role played by open data in sustainable development. It also helps in enhancing open data policy, improving access to data and encouraging dialogue between national statistical apparatuses and data users.
