Sultanate of Oman represented by the National Centre for Statistics and Information hosts National Open Data Symposium on 1-3 October 2018 in Kempinski Hotel - Al-Mouj. In this occasion, Dr. Khalifa bin Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Barwani, CEO of the National Centre for Statistics and Information, stated that the organization of this seminar marked the Sultanate's belief in the significance of the open data in promoting the development and its important role in the economic development, particularly through attracting the investment, as well as opening new horizons in business and industrial sectors for business entrepreneurs and SMEs.
"According to the evaluation of the international organizations concerned with Open Data including the Open Data Watch (ODW), the Sultanate has occupied advanced positions in opening the data. This is particularly clear when evaluating the electronic portal: www.ncsi.gov.om and other contained portals particularly the portal: www.data.gov.om" Al-Barwani added.
Al-Barwani also pointed out that the National Open Data Symposium targets all parties concerned with the Open Data in the public sector, private sector IT workers, programmers, developers, research institutions, scholars, students, as well as the institutions that sponsor the IT initiatives in Oman.
"The symposium aims at casting light upon Open Data, with regard to concept, importance, utilizations and reflections on the Sultanate's rating in the international indicators. It also aims at identifying some successful international applications on Open Data" Al-Barwani Said.
"The symposium also aims at reaching out agreements amongst the public sector institutions concerned with databases that could opened directly to the public and opening a window for dialogues between the public sectors and the private sector about The Open Data required to promote initiatives and innovations in the different sectors and fields" he added.
He pointed out that studies of the contents of the symposium's papers through discussions that will be held during its sessions and accompanied workshops, in addition to the participation of experts in open data as well as experts from the regional and international statistical organizations and agencies, will enable us to achieve recommendations that could maximize the benefits of open data in the Sultanate.
HE Dr. Khalifa bin Abdullah Al Barwani concluded that those who want to take part in this symposium within the accompanied workshops, may register in the symposium website on: https://opendata.ncsi.gov.om. He wishes that the National Open Data Symposium would achieve the desired objectives. He thanked all the participating teams for their efforts in the arrangement for this symposium.
